Living in Boise means experiencing distinct seasons, from hot summer days to cold, snowy winters. This range of temperatures puts a significant strain on your home’s heating and cooling systems. One of the most effective ways to manage your home’s climate and energy bills is by ensuring you have proper attic insulation. As I am writing this, the February temperature is about 32F, and today it will get to about 45F.

Most of the homes, and I am going to say 95% do not have any garage attic insulation. The reason why is money. Builders want to save money by not insulating your garage and this is a problem. When your home has no garage attic insulation, in the winter, the garage is cold, and in the summer, your garage is warm to hot. This does not help your home.

For many homes in the Treasure Valley area, the homes attic, and garage attic is a major source of energy loss. Heat naturally rises, escaping through an under-insulated attic in the winter. In the summer, the sun beats down on your roof, transferring intense heat into your living spaces. R38 insulation provides a thick thermal barrier that slows this transfer of heat. This means your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard to keep you warm, and your air conditioner runs less often to keep you cool, leading to year-round comfort and lower utility bills.

An uninsulated garage attic can create uncomfortable temperature swings, making the space unpleasant to use and affecting adjacent rooms. Before adding insulation, it’s crucial to air seal the garage attic. We exclusively use Soudafoam All-Season foam seals the gaps, cracks, top-plates and penetrations where air can leak. Especially the cold air, as this cold air sinks. This simple step prevents drafts and maximizes the performance of your new insulation.

By combining air sealing with a fresh layer of R38 fiberglass insulation in your garage attic, you create a more stable environment. Your garage will stay noticeably warmer during Boise’s chilly winters and cooler through the summer heat. This not only makes the space more functional for projects or storage but also provides an extra buffer zone, further protecting your main living area from extreme temperatures.
